Custom Build vs. Open Source CMS

Open Source vs Custom Build. It’s the question on everyone’s lips. The last year has seen an increased number of putITout’s clients insisting on us using an open source solution for their projects. We can obviously code according to any standard, but is this the right solution for our clients? Is too much functionality sacrificed for ease of development? putITout tackles this debate and helps you to understand what points to consider when choosing which solution might be best for you in our latest white paper. You can read it below.

Too much internet? - 18/06/2008

Do you find yourself rushing around the internet to the same sites every day? With more resources being provided through online portals this is an increasing problem. A company called Accentivo has created a technology to combat this problem by creating “agents” to automate web processes and present these processes as XML feeds. putITout can take these feeds and create bespoke applications to make your business more efficient. A simple example to demonstrate this feed is shown below:

Mashups - 13/05/2008

We have been doing a lot of research into mash-ups recently. We are currently building a couple of demo applications to show off the power of this technology. A mash up is the aggregation of the information from 2 or more sites. One of our favourite mashups compares google and yahoo search engines, showing what you miss by only using one search engine. You can see the mashup in full effect by following this link. There are plenty more examples of mashups at programmableweb.com, have a look and see where it takes you. An exciting area, watch this space.

Internet World 2008 - Drinks - 22/04/2008

Edd, Chris and Charlie from putITout will be attending the Internet World event at Earls Court next week. We thought it would be a great chance to see some old clients and put some faces to names. To this end we'll be in a pub round the corner after the show should you want to come and have a chat.

Sharepoint - 17/04/2008

Following several recent requests, putITout has taken the step to acquiring the services of a couple of excellent Sharepoint developers. SharePoint has proven very popular with large organisations who want a single, integrated platform to manage intranet, extranet, and Internet applications across their enterprise. One of the drivers behind this platform is to boost business productivity by simplifying access to organization-wide information.

Battlefield Microsoft - 04/04/2008

Reading about Microsoft is a hobby forced upon all of us. Its sometimes hard to disseminate all this information and the implications contained therein. There is a lovely diagrammatic representation from 2006 where you can see what battles are being won and lost. You can see that here.

Silver lining - 03/04/2008

With the global markets in decline and the journalists shouting doom and gloom , pronouncing that we are heading into a big recession (FT - UK recession). Our industry continues to surge (The new dotcom bom). Businesses have had time to prepare themselves for the internet and now that access (via broadband) has increased dramatically, so has demand. And who is needed to supply that demand? Our developers of course!

H (Header) Tags - 22/03/2008

Header tags are tags designed to help with the structure of HTML and allow for more symantic recognition of the elements of a site. It has been the question of some debate whether it is ever applicable to use more than one instance within a web page. Following a decent amount of research into the matter the best overview of the debate can be found on a thread within Linkedin entitled "Any downsides to using multiple H1 tags?". They are a topology to be phased out with HTML 5.0 and is by and large a grammar point. Although worth sharing.

Community - 05/06/2007

putITout, whilst adding a CMS to their accountant's website , suggests the addition of a "community" page. This fits in very well with the ethos of the accountant's company and is extra online exposure for their clients. Everybody's happy.
