putitout - now in mobile!

Happy to announce that our website is now available in mobile!

We've built several mobile optimised websites for clients lately, so why not our own?

Our own website isn't likely to become a portal - nor is that it's purpose, but it's certainly no bad thing to have a mobile presence, while internal projects are a good opportunity to bit a little more experimental.

Growth in the mobile web is an obvious, upward trend showing no signs of diminishing.

The 'app' is a great, understandable metaphor, which pervades all demographics, and apps are often preferred for the richer experience they can provide. But they're not without their drawbacks. Economically, the disparity and incompatibility between mobile platforms raises questions of viability.

iOS, Android, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Mobile 7, Palm Pre... All excellent platforms in their own right, but operating completely independent of each other.

In comparison, the web is ubiquitous.

Recent advancements in core web technologies, such as HTML5, Javascript, CSS3 and their support in browsers has seen the web experience with that of a native app.

The thorn in its side is infrastructure. As we've seen, this will improve with time, but until we have lightening fast and reliable 4G connections over the air, we have to make do with what we have; 3G at best.

With this in mind, we went for a hybrid solution; a self-enclosed website which functions like an app. Our mobile site uses a familiar horizontal navigation structure, while loading all the content within one page - no need to wait for the next page to load over the airwaves.

Try it for yourself.. It's optimised for the iPhone/iPod Touch at the moment, but with a few impending tweaks it should be just right on Android & Windows Mobile 7 phones too.
