Top of the Apps - May 2011

I had breakfast with my brother, Tim, this morning and he’s just bought himself an iPhone 4.  As an “advanced user who does not mind spending time getting to know his phone” he was not massively impressed with the functionality – its his first non-Nokia ever.

He can now interact, understand and empathise with his iPhone loving mates.  Tim is a very bright late twenty something with a penchant for beating people at games and planning ahead – brother, the below apps are for you.

(disclaimer – some of these have appeared before)

XE

Numbers and travel feature heavily in Tim’s life and this app ticks both those boxes.  From XE’s point of view, if you run an online service and your business model relies on securing your brand as the 'go to' for currency exchange you are honor bound to offer this service in whatever service your user wants it. For business travel and holidays you will want it as an app.

Words With Friends

Anyone who’s had any experience with  Scrabble will recognise this classic.  Tim will bemoan the altered layout if beaten, ignore it otherwise.   An intuitive interface makes correspondence wordplay easy.  Connecting humans makes for very addictive gameplay.  I’m “charliecad” if you’re up for a game…

Cycle Hire Widget

Boris’s bikes are everywhere.  Sometimes in greater than anticipated abundance when you want to park yours (Tim).  Download this cycle hire app and you’ll be able to easily navigate to a free bike docking station to put away your trusty steed.

WordLens

This application is a must for anyone who does not speak Spanish, wants to travel to Spanish speaking countries and like a bit of cool (on their brand new iPhone).  Using Augmented Reality and text recognition software paired in a wonderful way the application not only understands what text is in front if the handset but then layers the English translation of the text on top of that.  Signs are no longer a barrier.

Winkybang

This is a hilarious free application that makes you shake a “Winky” to the peak of its excitement before it then bursts, causing a “Winkybang”.  This is a goodie if only to hear the risqué screams that these little characters make.  We made this one.

Teux Deux

I’ve mentioned Tim is awesomely organuised and on his trusty Nokia any incompleted tasks from yesterday were automatically carried over.  A task his shiny new iPhone fails to deliver.  The Teux Deux service (online as well as with this slick app) solves this problem with style and ease.

Sleeptalk

Ever wondered what you might be saying when you’re asleep? Sleeptalk sits beside your bed, listening to your murmurs and noting them down, like an evil tooth fairy. In the morning it compiles highlights of your broken sleep to terrify you as you head to work.  Tim, this may also help you hear just how much you’ve been snoring.

Tube Map

Tim lives in London and sometimes uses the tume.  The tube map app does exactly what it says on the tin.  ...as well as checking service updates.
